Message from the President
Thank you all for attending the 2009 CTUG Fall Conference! We were very pleased with the high attendance numbers and overwhelming positive feedback for this annual event.
This year's Conference kicked-off with an HP NonStop Update presented by Randy Meyer, Director - NED Product Management. Randy’s presentation included the latest news from the NonStop Enterprise Division, including an update on the state of the business, key new customers and wins, and NED's continued drive towards a standard, modern hardware and software architecture.
Our keynote speaker, Ron LaPedis, Principal Advisor at Seacliff Partners International, gave a great presentation on Workforce Continuity. During this session he explored the issues and solutions that will keep your workforce connected, informed, and productive when an event keeps them away from the office for any reason. We also heard from Paul J. Holenstein, Executive Vice President, Gravic, Inc, on State-of-the-Art Asynchronous and Synchronous Replication. Paul did a great job of explaining the pros and cons of various replication methodologies to deliver continuous application availability.
The CTUG Conference also included a Connect Update by Chris Koppe, VP of Connect Worldwide, on news about other Regional User Groups. As always, the Conference provided an excellent opportunity for NonStop users to meet and network with industry peers. HP Partners, provided the latest news and information about their respective areas of expertise including; performance, database management, development, security, connectivity, storage, and more.
The success of this year's Conference is a testimony to the overwhelming support of the Canadian NonStop users, Hewlett-Packard, and our Vendor community. I would like to thank the organizers of the Conference, who volunteered their time and outstanding efforts to deliver this quality event. Your CTUG Board members are:

2009 CTUG Fall Conference – Sessions & Speakers
Day 1 – Presentations
Ron LaPedis, Principal Advisor at Seacliff Partners International

Title:Workforce Continuity
Over the years, companies have moved from high availability systems to fault tolerant
systems to geographically distributed systems and storage. But no matter the technology,
business continuity is all about the people. Business interruptions such as road
closures, transit strikes, pandemics, and severe weather can displace employees
from their workplace-without affecting your data center. Is your company ready for
smaller disruptions such as workforce relocation, plumbing failures, heating and
air conditioning problems, or perhaps a workplace violence incident? This session
explores the issues and solutions that will keep your workforce connected, informed,
and productive when an event keeps them away from the office for any reason. Like
a pancake is not complete without a topping of maple syrup, your business continuity
plan is not complete without including the people.
Speaker: Ron LaPedis
Ron LaPedis is Principal Advisor at Seacliff Partners International, LLC. He spent 25 years at HP becoming a business continuity and security specialist marketer, consulting with key customers and partners. At HP his roles were senior product manager for security and business continuity products and headquarters marketing manager for the Asia Pacific region.
Ron is a Master Business Continuity Professional (MBCP), a Member of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI), and a CISSP with ISSAP & ISSMP endorsements.

HP 2009 Strategy and Technology Update »
Paul J. Holenstein, Executive Vice President, Gravic, Inc

Title: State-of-the-Art Asynchronous and Synchronous Replication
As business needs drive higher and higher application availability requirements, various high and continuous availability architectures have evolved to meet those needs. We describe the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) model businesses use to quantify their needs, discuss the factors (and trade-offs) that affect each objective, and review various architectures in use today to attain these stringent goals. We also look out over the horizon at the next wave of technological advances in the development pipeline to understand how (hopefully) the technology is evolving to eventually deliver true continuous application availability with zero data loss in the event of a disaster.
Speaker: Paul J. Holenstein
Mr. Holenstein has direct responsibility for the Gravic, Inc. Shadowbase Products Group and Gravic Labs, the company’s intellectual property group. He has previously held various positions in technology consulting companies, from software engineer through technical management to business development, beginning his career as a Tandem (HP NonStop) developer in 1980. His technical areas of expertise include high-availability designs and architectures, data replication technologies, heterogeneous application and data integration, and communications and performance analysis. Mr. Holenstein holds many patents in the field of data replication and synchronization, writes extensively on high and continuous availability topics, and co-authored "Breaking the Availability Barrier," a three-volume book series. He received his BSCE from Bucknell University and his MSCS from Villanova University, and is an HP Master Accredited Systems Engineer (MASE).
